Session HE02: Worried Sick
Age group: 11-14
Series: Handling Emotions
Theme: Worry (Handling Emotions)
Total duration: mins
To teach what the Bible has to say about worry, in order to enable the young people to make a realistic assessment of their worries and minimise unnecessary worry.
Bible references: Matthew 6:25-34
Whilst we often have a variety of scriptures in each session in this one we will simply look at one key passage. We will look at it from a number of different points of view and try to get to grips with exactly what it means for us today.
Young people do not easily get their worries in perspective. Their worries about school, exams and what their friends think of them are the only real worries they have ever experienced outside their families. They haven't the full range of adult responsibilities about which to worry.
Try to avoid belittling their worries. They may often seem insignificant to us but they are serious in the world of the young person.
One of the best ways not to help someone who is worried is to say, ‘Don't worry.' It is likely that the worry was only raised with you because it had already started. Telling someone with concerns not to worry is like telling a hot person not to sweat. It would be better to help transfer them somewhere where the conditions were less likely to lead to sweating than to tell them to stop. We are going to try and move young people with worries from where they are to a place (spiritually speaking) where worry is less likely.
