Training Video: InFocus - Mentoring young people

28 Jun 2007

At the heart of this video is a desire to see the re-discovery of a holistic, biblical approach to developing young people; an approach we believe is most effective when used within a mentoring context.

The video is divided into four 15-minute sections, featuring interviews with youth leaders, expert opinion, discussion questions and practical advice. An A4 Worksheet has been produced for each of the four sections, designed to help teams to work through and reflect on the issues raised.

Ten sets of worksheets are included with the video and further copies may be downloaded from here.

We recommend that youth leadership teams work together through all four parts of the video – it will take about two hours including discussion time.

Here is a summary of the content:

In PART 1 we look at the changes in youth ministry in recent years, and discuss the benefits of moving to a more holistic approach. After a short study in Luke chapter 2 to look at a biblical view of the development of young people, we introduce mentoring as the ideal role for a youth leader involved in a holistic model of youth work.

In PART 2 we give some definitions of mentoring and outline some of the principles which underpin effective mentoring of young people. We then reflect on how mentoring is used throughout the Bible as an effective means of developing the emerging generation. Finally we look at a range of different mentoring styles and roles.

In PART 3 we present and develop a simple five-step approach to help youth leaders start out as a mentor, discover some practical ways to help build long-term relationships with young people, and reflect on some of the traps into which leaders can fall when mentoring young people.

In Part 4 we look at some of the practical issues and difficulties that can arise when youth leaders take on young people to be mentored, and we highlight some of things that mark out the distinctiveness of mentoring in a Christian context.

Copies of the Mentoring DVD may be purchased (in the UK only) for £7.00 (plus postage and packing). To order please please download a Merchandise and Resources Order Form or contact the Urban Saints Support Centre:
